From
Jo...
"We must make the state of our democracy relevant to American
voters because more and more of us are opting not to vote. I challenge
you to vote your conscience and to alter the dialogue about politics
among your friends and family. Voting one's conscience is never
a wasted vote. In fact, voting is one of the greatest freedoms
earned and one that we must protect. If we allow ourselves to
be manipulated into not expressing our true values through the
political process, then rest assured that the moneyed interests
will continue to bend government to their will. And we the people,
along with our most pressing national problems, will continue
to be ignored."
Every
culture throughout millennium has used the power of stories and
myths to transfer knowledge and inspire new ways of being.
Frankly, the United States is in desperate need of a new political
myth. Unfortunately, we have more nonvoters than voters today,
reflective of the hopelessness that many Americans feel to affect
political change. It is easy to feel hopeless in the face of a
corrupt political process. Special interest money currently controls
our public policy. No one on the left or right of the political
aisle can argue with that fact.
The
traditional media rarely gives equal time and attention to political
alternatives.
The media seems content to portray politics as a game and in the
quest for ratings (i.e. profits) has reduced the national dialogue
to 10 second sound bites focused on personalities and political
play-by-play. Opinion is reported as fact and many of the tough
questions required of our elected leaders remained unasked and
unanswered.
Exceptional
leaders do exist and they are working diligently, along with thousands
of others, to alter the course of U.S. history.
The
challenge is not a lack of viable alternatives, but an outlet
for these alternatives to communicate with the electorate. Our
nation’s love of competition does not seem to apply to voices
that are outside of the political status quo. These political
alternatives are routinely ignored or marginalized even when they
offer new ideas and solutions worthy of national debate.
